Weekly Contribution 4- An Overheard Conversation by Lam Xiao Ci

Setting: School cafeteria. Two students, Celine and Jessica, are sitting at a table during lunch. Their groupmate Jordan isn’t around, but someone nearby could overhear them.

Celine:
I’m so done with Jordan. He always says, “Sorry, I was busy,” but he never actually helps with the assignment.

Jessica:
Seriously! He’s always “too busy,” but I haven’t seen him do anything at all.

Celine:
I gave him the outline, the sources, even a sample paragraph. You know what he did?

Jessica:
Let me guess — he copied it without checking?

Celine:
Worse. He pasted it into the wrong file — the slideshow! And it was just a huge wall of text, in tiny letters.

Jessica:
Ugh. Not even a proper font?

Celine:
Nope. Just messy and unreadable. Then he writes, “Hope this helps :) :) :)” Like he just saved the project.

Jessica:
Three smiley faces? Wow. He really thinks he’s doing a great job.

Celine:
And when we asked him to practice for the presentation, he said, “I like to speak from the heart.”

Jessica:
What? It’s not a poem, it’s a group project!

Celine:
Exactly! I’m doing all the research, Amirah’s working on the design, and you’re putting it together. What is Jordan doing?

Jessica:
Making excuses. That’s his only talent.

Celine:
Should we tell the teacher? I don’t want to be a snitch, but come on…

Jessica:
If he skips the final meeting tomorrow, I say we leave his name off the report.

Celine:
laughs Harsh… but maybe fair.

Jessica:
Let’s just get it done. I’ll bring snacks, you bring your patience. We’ll survive — even without Jordan.
