Week 12 Thoughts by Chan Hui Lim

            It's almost time for the final exam, but we still have assignments, presentations, and tests to solve. After I return to the hostel, I will take some time to revise my short story (E-method). I hope to finish the assignments as soon as possible so that I can focus on other things. Although many tasks need to be completed, as long as time is allocated properly, one can definitely finish their homework on time. This Wednesday's tutorial psychology, our group will present a talk show. We spent 2 to 3 weeks to practice. We receive a certain return for our efforts, our hard works paid off. We showed our best performance in the talk show, and the teacher was very optimistic and praised us. We are very happy because we spent so much time in practicing the talk show and we are very satisfied with the final result.

Week 11 Thoughts by Chan Hui Lim

            I started editing my videos this week and I am looking forward to the results of the videos. Every day after return from school, I use my free time to edit videos. Due to prolonged exposure to the computer, my eyes are very tired and a bit painful. However, after a few days, I finally sorted out the trailer. Although my trailer may not be as good as others, I still tried my best to edit it. I will use my free time to complete the assignment and finish all the tutorial exercises. There are a midterm and a presentation this Friday, so there may be some pressure, but I have overcome it very well.

Week 10 Thoughts by Chan Hui Lim

            This week is quite busy because we have to start submitting assignments and some assignments are also due by the deadline. So what troubles me the most are the short stories and trailers of the E-method. My short story only consists of a few pages, and although the teacher has given us one week delay in submitting it, the trailer needs to be submitted first. I don't have any ideas about my trailer, but I only have 2 weeks left to think about it, so I have to start looking for shooting materials early. I started thinking about the content of my short story and shooting related videos. I spent 2 days to shoot my video, and now it's time to start editing the video. My mood has eased a bit. I feel less nervous because I have shoot everything that needs to be shoot for my content, just edit it.

Week 10 exercise - By Saranya

                                                                     Tittle = The wizard

 

Exposition:

Shery once walking home from her work. It was a dark night with full of silence, some frog croaks and buzzy sound of night bugs. The lane that she used for walking home was quite narrow.

 

Inciting incident:

Suddenly, Shery heard a growling sound behind her, when she looks back it was three wild dogs starring at her with furious eyes and sharp teeth. Shery started to run without looking back, she is running as fast as she can, then she stepped on a big rock and fell down with pain.

 

Rising action:

All the dogs are chasing in a fast mode. She try to wake up but she could not, her knees hurt so badly that she can barely stand. That’s when her eyes started to search for something that she can use as a weapon or shield to protect her from the fierce dogs. At few glance of her surrounding she saw a wooden broom. She quickly reach her hand to grab the wooden broom, but when she raise her hands toward the broom, the broom itself had flied to her hand.

 

Climax:

Unknowing of what is happening!  She is in big confusion and all she could ever think of was sitting on the broom. She wanted to sit on the broom and flew away from the angry dogs then she thought that her intrusive thoughts will not work. Still, she gave it a try and sit on the broom, slowly the broom started to fly and helped her to escape the area.

 

Falling action:

The next morning, Shery was staring at the broom and recall back what had happened last night. She can’t even believe that that broom flew her home safely, that’s just when her friend Feny came. Shery now had an idea, she ask feny to try to reach the broom without actually touching it. Feny is very confused but for the sake of her friendship she agreed to Shery. Feny raised her hand toward the broom with a distance without actually touching the broom. They waited for few minutes but nothing happened and then when Shery raised her hand toward the broom, the broom flew to Shery’s hand. Looking at this incident Feny was shocked and confuse and speechless.

 

Resolution:

That’s the moment they both realize that Shery had a supernatural power, and she thought that might be a wizard because only wizard can fly with their broom. Then Shery decided to go to Hogwarts to start her supernatural life with full of surprises and excitement or maybe there is more than just surprise.

week 10 - contribution by Saranya

 

      This week is a very fun week for me because i went to community service at Sjk(t) ladang nova scotia 2 for STEM program, where we Utar students go and guide the youngsters with amazing information about science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This event really gives me a good experience and a fun vibe around the children. The most fun part was the science project where we guide the youngsters to make a parachute using plastics, robe and water bottle, and we had created a spaced for them to pump the parachute and check how far it flew. This is the part that most of the students enjoyed.

          After that, in the engineering part we did thread using some chemical substance which really attracts the kids. After completing the program, i had a little chit chat with the teachers of the school and they were very friendly and one of them is now completing their third year of Phd and another future plan ahead. That's when i had the thought of one day i will complete my desired studies and become a lecture as i ambitioned.

Tittle: The Beautiful Princess

Exposition: 

Ali was just an ordinary traveler, wandering through distant lands in search of stories. One sunny afternoon, Ali stumbled upon a hidden village surrounded by a lush forest. There, he heard whispers of a reclusive princess known for her beauty and wisdom, who rarely appeared before the townspeople. His curiosity was instantly sparked.

Inciting Incident:

While exploring the village, Ali wandered into the royal garden and accidentally interrupted a quiet moment between the princess and her white dove. She just looked up and smiled, as if she had been expecting someone different. That fleeting moment changed everything. Ali wants to learn more about her.

Rising Action:

Over the next few weeks, Ali visited the gardens often, and each time, the princess would appear, a little more open than the last. They spoke of books, dreams, and the world beyond the palace walls. Despite her royal status, she longed for a simple, free life. They talked a lot until Ali realized that behind her graceful demeanor was a heart filled with wonder.

Climax:

One evening, under a sky full of stars, the princess confessed that her family had arranged a marriage she didn’t want. She asked Ali a question that left his heart racing: “Would you take me away from all this?” It was the biggest decision of both their lives. Ali took her hand and said yes.

Falling action:

They left the village quietly before dawn, crossing rivers and hills to a place where no one knew her name. Although it was risky, they felt alive and finally living the lives what they chose, not the ones chosen for them. The journey wasn’t easy, but they faced every challenge together.

Resolution:

In a small town, they built a quiet life filled with laughter, freedom, and love. She was no longer just a beautiful princess, she was Ali's partner. And every time someone asks Ali about his travels, Ali smile and said the story about the beautiful princess that he met.

 Exercise 1 - Scene rewrite in 3 POVs

(scene-  A character walks into a crowded room and realises someone they fear is there.)

First person:

   Why is there so many people in today's classroom? I should just stay home, any how I'll just go in. Ops, is that Michael ! Why is he here? Moreover he is sitting in the front row. I better get to my sits before his eyes turns toward me.

Third-person limited:

    Annie walked into the busy classroom which she never wanted to enter, any how she entered with a hesitation. Unfortunately, she saw the guy that always bullies her, sitting right in the front row of the classroom, now she can't exit the classroom, so she silently steps to her sit and covered her face with the hoodie she was wearing.

Second person:

     You are an introvert who try to avoid any human contact as much as possible and mind only your business. You entered your classroom full of people, just when you regret why you come to class today, you saw the bully sitting in the front row and now all you want to do is to walk away without appearing in front of him.

Exercise 2 - Show vs Tell through POV

( Describe a character who is jealous without using the word jealous.)

First person:

    Why is this garden so empty. Sigh! Is that Abu right there ? and he is walking with his girlfriend. How did he even pull this kind of beautiful girl, such a pretty lady should belong to a handsome guy like me. I bet this will never last, they will break up in few weeks or months! 

Third person limited:

     John saw Abu walking together with his girlfriend at the park, deep inside he always have a thought that how did a pretty girl like Jessy end up with a nerd like Abu. When he pass by the couple, he rolled his eyes and pretend not to look at them.

Omniscient:

      John walked pass by Abu and Jessy then he rolled his eyes, because he can't stand it when he see a nerd and a pretty lady be a couple. Deep inside Jessy always wanted to be with John but Jessy need Abu to do her assignment, so she has no choice but to be with Abu. When Abu look at John he always wonder how John is so happy and care free, Abu always wanted to be carefree and not tied up by Jessy, but it's never happening whether Abu likes it or not he should be with Jessy because he know Jessy loves him.

Exercise 3  - Voice check - First person POV

(A retired soldier get into an accident)

      I can do One thousand push ups, pounds of deadlift, hours of planks, miles of running all these are piece of cake for me. One day before i retire, i never thought one grenade would change my whole life. The war between us and the opposite country and unexpectedly a grenade thrown towards us, before we even get a chance to escape, it had exploded, i lost my both leg on that day. I am always proud to serve the country , i would even be more proud, if i had lost my life for the country, but why did i survive! Everyday i'm going through pain, i can't walk by myself , i can't go to the restroom by myself, i can't do exercises, every second I am moaning in tears, Oh god please have mercy on me and take me with you!

week 9 - What actually happened to me - By Saranya ( contribution )

 

      On last Saturday unfortunately I fell off from my bike and had bad injuries on my leg and i couldn't walk properly, the pain is unexplainable and i went to a nearby clinic to get antiseptic injection. As the doctor said i should take rest and not strain my leg much this week, it's been hard for me since i couldn't move much but on this Friday my wound is a little dried which is a good sign for me to start my routine.

      Therefore, I buckle up my shoelace and start with a 4km walk, it was a bit hard but i don't think I'm going to give up. The next day i can feel that my leg is slowly recovered and i had a walk and a slow jog for 7km, i feel really good that i have started my routine and i had that great feeling of unstoppable in me. 

week 8 contributions- Saranya

 

     This week is Raya week, as a typical student i already went back to my hometown Johor bahru. "Home sweet home." This week i spent as much time as possible with my family and we went to several malay people houses to celebrate Hari Raya together, the highlight of the festival is the 'Kuih Muih' which is Malay's traditional confectionery. There are many types of 'Kuih Muih', such as Almond London biscuit, cornflakes biscuits, Dahlia biscuit, kuih seri muka and many more. My personal favorite is the pineapple tart biscuit, which is a thick layer of soft biscuit in the outside and gooey pineapple jam roll in the inside, each bite will make us feel so alive and simply scrumptious. 

    These are just the platters, the main course dish was their ketupat, chicken rendang and lontong. Ketupat is rice that wrapped with palm leaves which is the most traditional and essential dish of the day. Overall, this Hari Raya is so fun i had a great time with my Malay friends and we call it a day by playing firecrackers in the night.

Exercise 1: Scene Rewrite in 3 POVs

Scene Prompt: A character walks into a crowded room and realises someone he/she fears is there.

1. First-person: I walk into the lecture classroom and realises Ali is fears in the classroom. I should have asked him about the actual reason that he stayed in this room and feel fear, but the words never came. I feel scared to ask him because I never talk with him before.

2. Third-person: When Maya entered the lecture classroom, she saw Ali is fears in that room. She felt scared because Ali did not want to say anything even Maya keeps asking him a lot of questions.

3. Second-person: Ali, why are you felt fear in this lecture classroom? Is there any problem that you are facing or somebody bully you? You are the student that always keep positive emotions in class.

Exercise 2: Describe a character who is jealous without using the word jealous.

1. First-person: I hate my younger brother because my dad only bought him a pair of new shoes, not for me. I think my younger brother forced away my father's love for me, making him love me less than before.

2. Third-person limited: Maya's father only bought a new pair of shoes for his younger brother, not for her. She felt very uncomfortable in her heart. She felt that her father's love for her had decreased, and he didn't love her as much as before.

3. Omniscient: Dad only bought a new bag for his younger brother yesterday. I feel very angry because my dad didn't buy it for me. My younger brother is very happy because he has received a new gift. I was afraid that my father's love for me would disappear forever, but my father told me that I have grown up and don't need these things anymore.

Exercise 3: Voice Check (First-person POV) 

Write a paragraph in first-person from the character had made an accident.

1. A 10-year-old child: I went to the waterfall with my neighbor's car today. We suddenly encountered a car accident on our way to the waterfall. I think it's very scary. I am very anxious because this is my first time experiencing a car accident and I don't know what to do. I saw that the person next to me seemed to be seriously injured. He had lost a lot of blood, and I dared not approach him. I left the car with the help of medical staff. They took me to the hospital and simply bandaged my wound.

Week 9 Thoughts by Chan hui Lim

            After return from school, I spent about 4 hours on my study. I started the assignment alone. There are many assignments, so I am very troubled. Unconsciously, time has already arrived at night. After I packed my documents, I started enjoying my food. I suddenly want to eat fried chicken today. So, on a whim, I bought McDonald's to eat. Sure enough, McDonald's fried chicken has never disappointed me. It is always so crispy, juicy, and although it tastes spicy, it is delicious. Fortunately, McDonald's fried chicken gave me strength, as if filled with energy and ideas. 

            I ordered a large pack of French fries because I really enjoy eating French fries, no matter how they are cooked. This is a set meal, so it also includes a hamburger. Hamburger is very large because it is use the fried chicken as their meat. I cannot eat anymore because I have 2 pieces of fried chicken and a hamburger. So I gave the remaining piece of fried chicken to my roommate and asked her to help me share the burden. It is a bie stress today but full of happiness, I hope every day can be so happy.

 

Week 8 Thoughts by Chan Hui Lim

 

            I went outdoors with my family this week. We visited a French village together today. We have temporarily distanced ourselves from the troubles of the city. This place is very special, giving people a feeling of renewal. As soon as I stepped into this city, I smelled the fragrance permeating the air. Carefully smell it, it is the fragrance of waffles, which also contains the aroma of various foods.

            The weather was not very good that day, with a slight drizzle in the sky, so people were walking in the city while holding umbrellas. These buildings which like castle were originally hotels for tourists to stay in. At the entrance of each building, there are all the hotel's house numbers written. 

            Continuing to walk, I saw many different gaming devices, such as a carousel for children, shooting games for adults, horse riding games, and so on. If you get tired from walking, there are also some small restaurants or cafes inside for you to rest. For example, if we feel hungry or thirsty, we can go to nearby convenience stores and restaurants to eat. There is a Starbucks available where people can sit and rest, enjoying a cup of coffee.

Flaws and fears:

Due to Lina was working while studying degree, she is worried that her results will decline. Therefore, she often fantasizes about her studies while working in the restaurant, which will distract her from doing a good job. Lina often gets distracted at work, which has seriously affected her work progress and efficiency. So, her boss called Lina after work and understood the reasons behind it. After understanding about Lina, the boss felt that Lina should prioritize academic management over work, as learning is more important than work. The boss believes that only by taking good care of her studies can Lina focus more on her work. Lina agrees and follows the boss’s instructions to handle both things well.

Personality:

Lina is a very filial child to her parents. She always hopes to do something that makes her parents proud and honourable. In order to prevent her parents from worrying about her tuition fees, she worked while studying to earn living expenses and tuition fees. Although the work is hard, every time she sees her parents smiling at her, she feels that it's all worth it. She can't imagine if she can successfully achieve her goal, but she believes that hard work will always yield results. She always extends a helping hand to her classmates when they need it, and she never cares about anything. Although Lina appears generous and kind, she also has her own bottom line, which is that she will not allow others to spread rumors about her family.

Write a scene with dialogue that reveals your character’s external and internal personalities.

Lina: (Lina is walking to the living room and saw her mother) Why are you moving this heavy chair? Let me move it.

Mother: Thank you darling. I think I want to put this chair to another place because this chair is no longer be use by others.

Lina: You can just call others to help you, you do not need to do by yourself. You are getting older now, you need to take care more of yourself. 

Mother: I understand what are the things that you are worried about, but I think I still can move a chair by myself. 

Lina: (Feel a bit sad and worried) It is okay, mom. But remember, if the things are too heavy for you to carry, just let others to do it, you should not force yourself to do certain thing. 

Mother: Ya darling, I will always remember it. Do not be too worried about me.

Lecture Week 8 by Chan Hui Lim

Task 1: Below are some “telling” sentences. Rewrite each one using sensory details and strong verbs to “show” the scene instead.

Telling: The library was quiet.

Showing: The space in the library feels so oppressive. The sound of needles falling to the ground, classmates flipping through books, and mosquitoes surrounding their ears can all be heard clearly. The footsteps of teachers and classmates entering and leaving can also disturb the students who are studying.

Task 2: Below are neutral sentences. Rewrite them twice—once in a cramped, restricted setting and once in an open, expansive setting.

Cramped, restricted setting:

She walked across the room-She cautiously passed by the messy table, afraid of accidentally spilling the cup full of juice. The surroundings are filled with the smell of garbage, making the air stagnant. She tried to walk past the table as much as possible because the ground was filled with leftover instant noodles and snack bags, making it feel like there was nowhere to rest.

Open, expansive setting:

She walked across the room-She opened her hands and enjoyed the cool air in the room to the fullest. The space inside is spacious, allowing people to freely engage in activities such as dancing, enjoying delicious food, singing, sleeping, and others. Surrounded by charming perfume which will let people want to stay in this place all the time. She happily opened her hands and spun around in place.

Task 3: Below are five themes. Choose one and create a setting that symbolizes or reinforces it.

A Fear of the Unknown- As soon as I opened the door, the room was very eerie, and the objects inside were almost completely invisible to the naked eye. There is a fragrance in the air, but upon closer inspection, there is a putrid odor that makes one feel a bit uneasy. The unknown variables ahead make people feel that there is danger ahead. I dare not approach because the naked eye cannot see ahead, and my body can clearly feel the waves of cool breeze.

Task 4: Choose one of the settings below and write a short dialogue-based scene where a character’s words and actions establish the environment.

Scene: A busy night market in Southeast Asia, following many different stalls, colorful lights, and pedestrians walking freely on the road. The night market vendors are working hard to shout, hoping that their business can do well and make many customers happy to consume. Each consumer has a few bags in their hands, looking like they have gained a lot.

Lina:  “Wah, there are many people in the night market! Look like there many stalls that we can explore lah. ”

John: “Ya lah, and the hot also no joke. I feel like I am under the sun even now is night.”

Lina: “Some more, I think I need to take shower again sudah because my clothes are getting wet.”

John: “Nevermine, let’s go fo shopping together, there seem to be a lot of delicious food here. I can't wait to buy a lot of delicious food and return home to enjoy it! ”

Lina: “Sure. I believe that food will make us happy. Am I right? ”

John: “Of course.”

Week 7 thoughts - By Saranya

         This week in e-methods class our lecturer taught us about story writing, which is one of our assignment submission as well. During the lecture she explain many kinds of story writing and the do and don'ts of story writing, which actually surprised me a little with all the details because I'm a person who doesn't really love book reading and quite unfamiliar with books and how to write a story and so on. So, deep down i realize tough time has started and I'm about to do things that are now familiar with me. I take a deep breath and i told myself there are more mountains to climb.

This week i got two midterm examination, as usual i lock myself in my room and study for the exam. I got a few friends who ask me to play badminton with them and i rejected because i wanted to study for exam. Meanwhile, for this week's e-method class our lecturer teaches us about concrete poem and my honest reaction is disbelieve because how could people actually put their poetry in a shape and present it as a beautiful art and as a language student once i heard i need to do something with art i was a bit shock and quite confuse of how am i going to do that. But i still tell myself to stay strong i got this.

This week is quite hectic whereby i have one midterm and one assignment submission which was the free verse poem. This week i fully invest my time in studying for the examination. After the exam i really feel the pressure of how much more we need to study especially for psychology, it was quite hard for a midterm level and i realize there is so much more i need to prepare for the final examination. I told myself i should never give up on this and i have to do my best for the subjects despite the difficulties in it.

This week me and friend Hui lim discussed about the free verse poem that we need to submit next week on week 5. I get to know Hui Lim not long a go i just knew her from the start of this trimester and i am having a good friendship with her , she is friendly and humble. One day we went to the reading corner to discuss our free verse poem, we both doesn't have any knowledge about free verse poem since we both actually doing it for the first time So, we did some search in the website, during the discussion we discussed our idea and everything was smooth as butter there is no chaos or who's idea should be dominant, so i'm happy that i get an easy going teammate.

This week was quite busy because lecturers has started to inform us about the assignments and here we go the roller coaster is about to start. Deep inside, all i want is good teammates who will do their work and discuss together where discussion should occur. I really hope things goes well for assignments this trimester and i realized the assignments are very different from foundation and here i am ready to face any challenges that is coming through my way.

This week i am in full of productivity, after entering all the lectures and tutorial i feel like this trimester is  going to be fun with all these interesting subject. This week i created a timetable that balance between my study and sports. I am a person who loves sports a lot, i play badminton, basketball, chess and so on. The most favorite one will be badminton. This week i went to Kampar sports complex four times to play badminton with my seven friends , i love the blood rush and adrenaline rush that happens in my body while playing badminton.

Family and Background

Sita is a 30 years old teacher, who was born and raised up in an indian family in a urban area , she is the only child of the house and she was married at the age of  27. She is a teacher in a secondary school and her family is her only motivation that drive her to be a teacher . Her father, mother, aunty, uncle are all teachers in different schools. Since young Sita grew up by watching their family members deeply value their profession as educators. Growing up in an Indian family Sita is familiarized with the saying of  '' Mata, Pita , Guru, Deivam'' which means  '' Mother, father , Educator, God, which they strongly believe that a job that educate people has virtuousness.

Sita's father, Kannan, who was raised in a rural area so call village. Sita always admire her father on how he was well raised and how well educated and smart is he. Kannan is currently a Headmaster in a high school in the city. Kannan move out of village once he get his teacher posting at the city though, he often tell his family about how much he misses the fresh air of his village and the adventures games that he used to play when he was young. Sita loves her father so much and always obey him no matter what he said. Sita's mom Devi is an inspiration for her, since young sita is watching her mom's excellent multitasking skill on managing the household at the same time managing her work. Devi's wisdom and knowledge never failed to inspire Sita to be like her mom. 

Goals and Motivation

Driven by amazing family background. Sita never stops getting her knowledge, her aim is to complete her masters and her doctorate of philosophy  in mathematics. Her goal is to be a professor in Harvard University, until today despite she is married she is continuing her masters, at the same time taking care of her children. Kannan and Devi have never fail to support Sita in achieving her goal ever since she is young. They always motivate Sita to be herself and choose what she likes and follow where  her heart leads, Sita is very grateful for her parents because they have never fail to be her mentor.

Fear

There are many obstacle in her way to achieve her desired goal. Her husband Ram is in the Navy. He barely comes home, usually once or twice in a year so Sita has to raise her three kids without depending on her husband. Many days, Sita is too tired to balance her life between her goals, her work and her household, sometimes she even wanted to give up because of all the complications in her life that she's facing.

Personality

Internally she may seemed insecure and sometimes her will power is not enough for her to go through her obstacles but still her strong desire to achieve her goals will never be vanished,  Externally, she always appears strong. Her family members always sees her as an independent woman and she will do whatever it takes to achieve what she wants. They believe that no obstacle can stop Sita from achieve her dream. Kannan and Devi strongly believe, one day their girl will achieve it no matter what it takes. More greater challenge is waiting for Sita, but her strong personality will tackle her barriers.
