Task 1 

Below are some “telling” sentences. Rewrite each one using sensory details and strong verbs to “show” the scene instead. 

Telling: 

The library was quiet.

Showing:

Whispers floated between the shelves, and the soft rustle of turning pages was the only sound that broke the stillness. Footsteps padded gently across the carpet, as if even shoes were trying not to disturb the silence.

Task 2 

Below are neutral sentences. Rewrite them twice—once in a cramped, restricted setting and once in an open, expansive setting.

Cramped, Restricted Setting:
She squeezed between scattered chairs, her shoulder brushing the peeling wallpaper as she carefully stepped over a pile of tangled wires.

Open, Expansive Setting:

She strode across the wide, sunlit hall, her footsteps echoing off the marble floor with each confident step.
